The Carlyle is one of Miami Beach’s most famous Art Deco fixtures, most recognizable in the great American films Scarface, Bad Boys 2 and The Birdcage. Designed by the late German architect Richard Kiehnel, of the Kiehnel & Elliot firm in 1941, the hotel meets a number of stylistic traits of Art Deco: the pastel color palette of sea foam green and white; a flashy ensemble of striking vertical piers, horizontal lines, visor-like sunshades and curvaceous corners; and the building adheres to the rule of thirds (involves mentally dividing up your image using 2 horizontal lines and 2 vertical lines), with its three dividing sections topped by curved edges. Currently, The Carlyle is both a hotel and residential condominium building.
